The colossal sculpture, located on façade of the south-eastern corner of the new depot building on Görzer Straße in Munich, resembles an abstract galleon. Visible from both Görzer Straße and Chiemgaustraße, the sculpture protrudes from the upper edge of the façade like a beacon amid the urban surroundings. The robust yet delicate aluminum construction is clearly directed outwards. The sculpture “Extraeck” (extra corner) is the work of artist duo L+S (Lutz-Rainer Müller and Stian Ådlandsvik). With its organic metal forms, which contrast with the depot’s clear geometric structures of the windowless wooden façade, it resembles a foreign object, akin to an oversized piece of chewing gum which has become stuck to the building. The imprints of hands and fingers adorning it are clearly visible on the metallic surfaces.

A main design element, the gestural hand movements are incorporated into the production process. The sculpture constitutes a crude, handmade clay form, which was attached to an architectural model on a scale of 1:25. The model was scanned three-dimensionally using modern imaging techniques and the digital form was scaled to the size of the depot building. This electronic version served as the basis for the creation of the sculpture consisting of individual aluminum elements, which were then installed on the building’s facade. The sculpture unites two materials, whose distinct properties are mutually dependent with regard to their shape and surface properties. Heavy, coarse clay was transformed into shimmering light metal. This reversal of materiality and form is also a reference to road maintenance, where infrastructure is manually maintained, for instance when pot holes are repaired using various coarse materials. The light metal car rims roll on the planes created in this way.

Two- and three-dimensionality, mass, surface, material, volume and context are the basic parameters of all sculptural objects. With “Extraeck”, Lutz-Rainer Müller and Stian Ådlandsvik playfully experiment with these basic conditions. They swap material and combine an original, gestural design with high-tech processes. By dramatically altering the dimensions, they dissolve the original form, thereby creating new contextual references, which foster diverse assessments of the details. The artist duo also employ the existing depot building on Görzer Straße as a presentation platform, where the building serves as the ‘pedestal’ or base of their sculptural intervention. The building and the sculpture are mutually dependent; without the building, the sculpture would literally have no support.
