Er studierte Bildhauerei an der Akademie der Bildenden K\u00fcnste M\u00fcnchen. F\u00fcr seine Arbeit erhielt er 1999 den F\u00f6rderpreis f\u00fcr Bildende Kunst der Stadt M\u00fcnchen sowie 2001 den Bayerischen Staatsf\u00f6rderpreis f\u00fcr Bildende Kunst. Aufenthalte f\u00fchrten ihn u. a. 2009 an die Villa Aurora in Los Angeles sowie 2009\/10 an die Cit\u00e9 Internationale des Arts in Paris. 2014 war er Artist in Residence am Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin. The artworks are called “clouds”. Both “clouds” float in airy staircase foyer spaces, one in a primary school, the other in a high school. Each “cloud” consists of lattice structures composed of colorfully painted steel tubes. In a streamlined manner, they reproduce two characteristic cloud formations; the object in the elementary school is reminiscent of the classic, compact cumulus, the cloud that is most familiar to us when drawing clouds. When regarding the “cloud” in the high school, one might recall a veil cloud, also known as cirrostratus. In nature, this cloud formation consists of ice crystals and can occur in parallel layers, moving across the sky in bands.<\/p>\n

The colors of the abstract “clouds” reflect and reinforce the architectural color concept of the two school buildings. Accordingly, the “cloud” in the elementary school is painted in a raspberry red, complemented by a fire engine red on its underside. The “cloud” in the high school, in contrast, is painted in a bright ultramarine blue that becomes a dark midnight blue on its bottom. The geometric “clouds” form a kind of sky in the stairwells for students, teachers, and guests, lending the rooms an airy, light, and floating sensation and creating a play of light and shadow. The artworks also reflect the cubic volumes of the two school buildings and the block structure of the newly developed neighborhood. They thus respond to the proportions of the stairwells, their generously dimensioned atria, and their surroundings.<\/p>\n

At the same time, both “clouds” also have figurative significance. Cloud imagery also exists in our language. We can be \u201con cloud nine,\u201d or \u201cfall out of thin air,\u201d our world is populated by \u201cskyscrapers\u201d and \u201ccastles in the air.\u201d Poets and philosophers also frequently employ cloud imagery. More than 200 years ago, Friedrich Schiller wrote in his poem \u201cDie Gunst des Augenblicks\u201d (The Favor of the Moment): \u201cIt must fall from the clouds, from the lap of the gods, happiness…\u201d Younger observers are likely to associate the term \u201ccloud\u201d primarily with digital knowledge storage \u2013 and with the (often blind) confidence that all knowledge is \u201cin the cloud.\u201d The idea may also arise that ubiquitous access to stored knowledge not only supports learning but may even make it superfluous. But can we really rely on it forever?<\/p>\n

In any event, knowledge cannot be stored in in these cloud structures, for they are neither virtual data structures nor analog vessels. Nor are they the \u2018real\u2019 clouds we know from nature. Die beiden Kunstwerke, die in der Grundschule und im Gymnasium jeweils im Luftbereich der gro\u00dfen Treppenhausfoyers h\u00e4ngen, hei\u00dfen “clouds” (\u201eWolken\u201c). Sie bestehen jeweils aus Gitterstrukturen, die wiederum aus farbig lackierten Stahlrohren zusammengesetzt sind. Auf vereinfachte Weise geben sie zwei charakteristische Wolkenformen wieder: Das Objekt in der Grundschule erinnert an den klassischen, kompakten Cumulus, also an die Wolke, die uns die vertrauteste Form ist, wenn es ums Zeichnen geht. Im Gymnasium k\u00f6nnte man an eine Schleierwolke denken, auch Cirrostratus genannt. In der Natur besteht diese Wolkenformation aus Eiskristallen, kann in parallelen Schichten auftreten und zieht in B\u00e4ndern am Himmel entlang.<\/p>\n

Die Farben der abstrahierten “clouds” nehmen das architektonische Farbkonzept der beiden Schulgeb\u00e4ude auf und verst\u00e4rken es. Entsprechend ist die \u201aWolke\u2018 in der Grundschule in einem Himbeerrrot gestrichen, an ihrer Unterseite wird es durch ein Signalrot erg\u00e4nzt. Die \u201aWolke\u2018 im Gymnasium\u00b4 hingegen ist in einem leuchtenden Ultramarinblau lackiert, das an ihrer Unterseite in ein dunkleres Nachtblau wechselt. Die geometrischen clouds bilden in den Treppenh\u00e4usern f\u00fcr Sch\u00fclerinnen und Sch\u00fcler, Lehrkr\u00e4fte und G\u00e4ste eine Art Himmel, der den R\u00e4umen etwas Luftiges, Leichtes und Schwebendes verleiht, ein Spiel mit Licht und Schatten erzeugt. Die Kunstwerke nehmen auch die kubischen Volumina der beiden Schulgeb\u00e4ude sowie die Blockstruktur des neu entstandenen Stadtviertels auf. Sie antworten also auf die Proportionen der Treppenh\u00e4user, auf deren gro\u00dfz\u00fcgig dimensionierten Luftraum sowie die weitere Umgebung.<\/p>\n

Gleichzeitig lassen die beiden “clouds” auch Bedeutungen im \u00fcbertragenen Sinne zu. Denn Wolken-Bilder finden sich in unserer Sprache viele: Man \u201eschwebt auf Wolke sieben\u201c oder \u201ef\u00e4llt aus allen Wolken\u201c, es gibt den \u201eWolkenkratzer\u201c oder das \u201eWolkenkuckucksheim\u201c. Auch Dichter:innen und Philosoph:innen verwenden das Wolkenbild h\u00e4ufig. Schon Friedrich Schiller schrieb in seinem Gedicht \u201eDie Gunst des Augenblicks\u201c vor \u00fcber 200 Jahren: \u201eAus den Wolken muss es fallen, aus der G\u00f6tter Scho\u00df, das Gl\u00fcck…\u201c<\/p>\n

J\u00fcngere Betrachterinnen und Betrachter d\u00fcrften beim Begriff \u201acloud\u2018 vor allem an die digitalen Wissensspeicher denken \u2013 und an das (manchmal blinde) Vertrauen, dass sich alles Wissen \u201ein der Cloud\u201c befindet. Auch der Gedanke k\u00f6nnte aufkommen, dass der allgegenw\u00e4rtige Zugriff auf das gespeicherte Wissen das Lernen nicht nur unterst\u00fctzt, sondern m\u00f6glicherweise sogar \u00fcberfl\u00fcssig macht. Doch kann man sich wirklich f\u00fcr immer darauf verlassen? In den “clouds” jedenfalls, diesen Wolken-Ger\u00fcsten, l\u00e4sst sich kein Wissen speichern. Denn sie sind weder virtuelle Datengebilde noch analoge Gef\u00e4\u00dfe. Aber sie sind eben auch keine \u201aechten\u2018 Wolken, wie wir sie aus der Natur kennen. Auf augenzwinkernde Weise stellen sie mit bildnerischen Mitteln eine eigene Wirklichkeit dar \u2013 Kunst eben. Und sie lassen anklingen, dass die Schule in der Zukunft mit digitalen wie mit analogen Realit\u00e4ten gleicherma\u00dfen verbunden bleibt, bei denen immer auch Vorstellungskraft und Kreativit\u00e4t gefragt sind.<\/p>\n","werk_txt_context":"

Das zweiteilige Kunstwerk \u201eclouds\u201c von Albert Weis wurde im Rahmen eines Kunst am Bau Wettbewerbs f\u00fcr den Bildungscampus Neufreimann im Stadtbezirk Schwabing-Freimann von der Kunstkommission zur Realisierung empfohlen. Eine der “clouds”-Arbeiten ist im Treppenhausfoyer der sechsz\u00fcgigen Grundschule installiert, die sechs Lernh\u00e4user mit jeweils vier Klassen sowie eine Zweifachsporthalle umfasst. Die zweite Arbeit befindet sich im Foyer des sechsz\u00fcgigen Gymnasiums, das \u00fcber sechs Lernh\u00e4user mit jeweils sechs Klassen und drei Lernh\u00e4user, eine Aula, eine Dreifachsporthalle sowie eine Schwimmhalle verf\u00fcgt. Die Bauma\u00dfnahme umfasst dar\u00fcber hinaus ein Haus f\u00fcr Kinder mit drei Krippen- und drei Kindergartengruppen.
