What is nature, and are humans and nature diametrically opposed? Initially, one might regard double fruit trees as a miracle or, at second glance, simply the successful grafting of fruit trees. In \u201cHortus Parvulorum\u201d, Wolfgang Groh\u2019s artwork for the day care center on Fortnerstra\u00dfe, nature transformed by humans is an integral component of the artistic ensemble.<\/p>\n

\u2018Hortus Parvulorum\u2019 literally means \u2018children\u2019s garden.\u2019 Just as the environment plays an important role in the facility with its extensive garden, the artistic intervention also takes its cue from nature. Groh has used four different elements to define this place of learning and experience in the outdoor space. The result is a small square in the greenery; an intimate area where the children can explore the world of flora and fauna and exchange ideas with the nature educators.<\/p>\n

The four-by-four meter area has a slip-resistant surface and is surrounded on two sides by a concrete corner bench. The Munich artist planted a small, grafted tree with apples and stone fruit in each of the two corners. In summer, the children and teachers can see two different varieties of apples growing on one tree and small Mirabelle plums and another plum variety on the other.<\/p>\n

The work, however, focuses conceptually not only on how we deal with nature; it also thematically visualizes it. In its center a group of patinated bronze figures are mounted on a pedestal and encounter the children at eye level. Created by the sculptor Elisabeth Wieberneit , the work depicts four young children\u2014two girls and two boys\u2014hard at work. Two stand directly on the balancing plinth, straining to keep a stack of beams in balance. This is particularly difficult, as the other two youngsters are on the four stacked beams, which, in turn, carry a lush garland of fruit and leaves. The wreath is inspired by ancient Roman depictions symbolizing the celebration of nature and its fruits as a gift from the gods. The sculpture similarly demonstrates the great effort involved in maintaining the fragile balance between nature and mankind.<\/p>\n

On a corner of the small square forum, facing the daycare center, there is a \u2018crowned\u2019 locked cabinet. A treasure chest, perhaps? Possibly. Behind its closed door, the \u201ccompost critters\u201d are hard at work turning the organic waste they have been fed into valuable soil. They remain invisible to us, but a horde of tiny creatures ensures that the garden remains fertile and the trees will continue to bear fruit in the future. These tiny organisms deserve a crown for their work.<\/p>\n

\u201cA garden is not an object, but a process,\u201d[1] the Scottish writer and artist Ian Hamilton Finlay once wrote. In \u201cHortus Parvulorum\u201d Wolfgang Groh illustrates this development as a cycle of growth and decay.<\/p>\n

Was ist Natur? Sind Mensch und Natur Gegens\u00e4tze? Ein Baum, an dem zweierlei Fr\u00fcchte wachsen, ist auf den ersten Blick ein Wunder. Auf den zweiten die gelungene Veredelung von Obstgeh\u00f6lz. Im \u201eHortus Parvulorum\u201c, Wolfgang Grohs Kunstwerk f\u00fcr die Kindertagesst\u00e4tte an der Fortnerstra\u00dfe, ist die \u2013 vom Menschen \u00fcberformte \u2013 Natur ein selbstverst\u00e4ndlicher Teil der Kunst.<\/p>\n

\u201eHortus Parvulorum\u201c bedeutet w\u00f6rtlich \u00fcbersetzt Kindergarten. Weil in der Einrichtung mit weitl\u00e4ufigem Garten die Umwelt eine wichtige Rolle spielt, ist auch die Kunst darauf ausgerichtet. Mit vier verschiedenen Elementen hat Groh einen Lehr- und Erlebnisort im Au\u00dfenraum definiert: Einen kleinen, quadratischen Platz im Gr\u00fcnen, an dem die Kinder mit den Naturp\u00e4dagog:innen Pflanzen- und Tierwelt erkunden und sich austauschen k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n

Die vier mal vier Meter gro\u00dfe Fl\u00e4che mit Fallschutzbelag ist an zwei Seiten von einer Eckbank aus Beton umgeben. An zwei Ecken wiederum pflanzte der M\u00fcnchner K\u00fcnstler je ein veredeltes B\u00e4umchen mit Kern-, bzw. Steinobst. Im Sommer k\u00f6nnen die Kinder und Erzieher:innen an dem einen zwei verschiedene Apfelsorten, an dem anderen kleine Mirabellen und dicke Pflaumen wachsen sehen.<\/p>\n

Aber die Arbeit stellt nicht nur konzeptuell den Umgang mit Natur in den Fokus, sondern macht ihn auch bildhaft zum Thema. Im Mittelpunkt steht auf einem Sockel in Augenh\u00f6he f\u00fcr Kinder eine Figurengruppe aus patinierter Bronze. Sie wurde geschaffen von der Bildhauerin Elisabeth Wieberneit und zeigt vier kleine Kinder, zwei M\u00e4dchen und zwei Jungen, die schwer besch\u00e4ftigt sind: Zwei stehen direkt auf dem Sockel und strengen sich an, einen Stapel aus Balken im Gleichgewicht zu halten. Was besonders schwierig ist, denn auf den vier aufeinandergeschichteten Balken balancieren zwei weitere Kinder, die wiederum eine \u00fcppige Girlande mit Obst und Bl\u00e4ttern tragen.<\/p>\n

Die Girlande ist von antik-r\u00f6mischen Darstellungen inspiriert, in denen sie ein Symbol f\u00fcr die Feier der Natur und ihrer Fr\u00fcchte als Gabe der G\u00f6tter gewesen ist. Doch die Plastik zeigt auch: Es bedeutet eine gro\u00dfe M\u00fche, das fragile Gleichgewicht aus Natur und Mensch in der Balance zu halten.<\/p>\n

An der Ecke des kleinen Platzes zum Kita-Geb\u00e4ude hin steht dar\u00fcber hinaus ein verschlossener Schrank, der eine Krone tr\u00e4gt. Eine Schatztruhe also? Ja und nein. Hinter ihrer verschlossenen T\u00fcr vollbringen die \u201eKomposttiere\u201c ihr Werk. Man f\u00fcttert sie mit biologischen Abf\u00e4llen, sie machen daraus wertvolle Erde. Sie bleiben f\u00fcr uns unsichtbar, aber eine Horde Kleinstlebewesen sorgt hier daf\u00fcr, dass der Garten fruchtbar bleiben kann, und die B\u00e4ume auch morgen noch Fr\u00fcchte tragen. Daf\u00fcr haben sie allemal eine Krone verdient.<\/p>\n

\u201eEin Garten ist kein Gegenstand, sondern ein Prozess\u201c[1], schrieb einst der schottische Schriftsteller und K\u00fcnstler Ian Hamilton Finlay. Und Wolfgang Groh macht im \u201eHortus Parvulorum\u201c diese Entwicklung als Kreislauf aus Werden und Vergehen deutlich.<\/p>\n

Das QUIVID-Kunstwerk \u201eHortus Parvulorum\u201c des in M\u00fcnchen lebenden K\u00fcnstlers Wolfgang Groh entstand f\u00fcr den Neubau des Haus f\u00fcr Kinder in der Fortnerstra\u00dfe im Stadtbezirk 24 Feldmoching-Hasenbergl. An diesem Standort ging schon Mitte der 1950er Jahre die erste M\u00fcnchner Kinderkrippe in Betrieb. Das neue Haus f\u00fcr Kinder, ein Projekt der Ausbauoffensive Kindertagesst\u00e4tten, wird als Integrationseinrichtung mit zus\u00e4tzlichen R\u00e4umen f\u00fcr Therapieangebote gef\u00fchrt.
