Als Jason Rhoades eingeladen wurde, im Neubaugebiet Theresienh\u00f6he* eine Arbeit f\u00fcr den Platz vor dem Verkehrszentrum des Deutschen Museums zu realisieren, stand der Vorschlag im Raum, an diesem Ort das Thema \u201eglobale Geschwindigkeit\u201c aufzugreifen. Rhoades reagierte mit einer Schnecke, jenem Tier also, das als sprichw\u00f6rtlich langsam gilt, das aber auch, \u00e4u\u00dferst mobil, sein \u201eHaus auf dem R\u00fccken tr\u00e4gt\u201c.<\/p>\n
Die s\u00fc\u00dfe braune Schnecke ist die monumentale Vergr\u00f6\u00dferung einer Nippesschnecke und steht in enger Verbindung mit einer Serie anderer Arbeiten. Ende der neunziger Jahre hatte Jason Rhoades zusammen mit Paul McCarthy \u2013 die beiden renommierten K\u00fcnstler stammen von der US-amerikanischen Westk\u00fcste \u2013 die so genannten \u201eProppositions\u201c entwickelt. Das Wort erscheint auf den ersten Blick wie eine Falschschreibung des englischen \u201eProposition\u201c (Vorschlag). Es kann aber auch als eine Addition aus \u201eProp\u201c (Eigentum) und \u201ePosition\u201c gelesen werden, was dann etwa soviel bedeutet wie Besitz in Relation zu seiner Position oder das in Position gebrachte Eigentum.<\/p>\n
Eine der \u201eProppositions\u201c besteht aus dem Nippesinventar eines Kioskes, das die beiden K\u00fcnstler vollst\u00e4ndig angekauft hatten und als \u201ePropposition\u201c im Kunstkontext wieder verkauften, Die \u201eSweet Brown Snail\u201c basiert auf einer Schnecke des ehemaligen Kioskbestandes. Die \u00dcbertragung des kleinen, f\u00fcr heimelige Innenr\u00e4ume bestimmten Vorbildes in eine f\u00fcr den \u00f6ffentlichen Au\u00dfenraum bestimmte Gro\u00dfskulptur aus Fiberglas betreibt ein Spiel mit Emotionen und Ma\u00dfst\u00e4ben. Dem Putzigen der Schnecke steht ihre Ehrfurcht gebietende Gr\u00f6\u00dfe entgegen. Vor der Schnecke erscheinen die Passanten klein und doch wird das im Nippesvorbild angelegte Niedliche damit keineswegs zum Verschwinden gebracht. Die \u201eSweet Brown Snail\u201c zielt auf emotionale Identifikation und rationale Distanzierung. When Jason Rhoades was invited to create a work of art for the plaza in front of the \u00a0Deutsches Museum\u2019s transit hub in the city\u2019s new district of Theresienh\u00f6he, there was a suggestion that the theme of \u201cworldwide speed\u201d should be addressed. Rhoades came back with a snail, a creature known as a metaphor for slowness but one that is also extremely mobile, since it \u201ccarries its house on its back.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Sweet Brown Snail is a monumentally sized enlargement of a bric-a-brac snail and closely associated with a series of other works of art. In the late 1990s Jason Rhoades worked with Paul McCarthy (both renowned artists are from the American West Coast) to develop the so-called Proppositions. At first glance, the title looks like a misspelling of \u201cpropositions.\u201d But it can also be read as a mix of \u201cprop\u201d and \u201cposition,\u201d which can be interpreted as referring to \u201cproperty, as it relates to its position,\u201d or \u201cproperty brought into position.\u201d<\/p>\n
One of the Proppositions consists of the inventory of knick-knacks in a kiosk, which the two artists bought up in its entirety and then sold again in an artistic context as Proppositions. The Sweet Brown Snail is modeled after a snail in the kiosk\u2019s inventory. By turning this small knick-knack made to decorate domestic interiors into a large, fiberglass sculpture and placing it outdoors in public, the artists play with emotions and proportions. The snail\u2019s cuteness stands in opposition to its awe-inducing size. Next to the snail, passersby look small, and yet the adorableness of the knick-knack does not vanish. The Sweet Brown Snail aims for emotional identification and rational distancing.
