\u201eIch entdecke, dass ich die Sprache einer Disziplin nehme und sie mit meinem pers\u00f6nlichen Leben kreuze, also ein System \u00fcber ein anderes legen kann\u201c hat die amerikanische Bildhauerin Kiki Smith einmal ihre k\u00fcnstlerische Arbeit kommentiert. F\u00fcr die gro\u00dfe Seitenwand im Obergeschoss des Caf\u00e9s im Petuelpark hat sie eine dreiteilige Wandarbeit geschaffen, die den Besucher in die Welt der Phantasie und des Traums zu entf\u00fchren suchen: Zwei Sternenkonstellationen rahmen die Darstellung eines Rosenbusches, so als w\u00fcrde der Betrachter nachts neben dem Busch stehen und in den klaren Sternenhimmel schauen. Die K\u00fcnstlerin \u00f6ffnet damit den Innenraum der Architektur in den Au\u00dfenraum des Petuelparks.<\/p>\n
Ausgangsmaterial der Reliefs von Kiki Smith sind Bronzeplatten, deren Umriss- und Binnenzeichnung mit Wasserstrahl unter hohem Druck bearbeitet werden. Anschlie\u00dfend wird das Material so nachbehandelt, dass eine gr\u00fcnliche Patina die Oberfl\u00e4che belebt und die Material\u00e4sthetik der Bronze in den Hintergrund tritt. Die Formensprache dieser neuen Werkserie der K\u00fcnstlerin sind den unterschiedlichsten historischen oder literarischen, wissenschaftlichen oder kunstgeschichtlichen Quellen entnommen und werden daraufhin mit der eigenen, pers\u00f6nlichen Gedankenwelt vermischt: Anatomische Untersuchungen, mittelalterliche Darstellungen, Gegenst\u00e4nde und Objekte aus verschiedensten Kulturen, Mythologien und Religionen, wobei sich Kiki Smith oftmals auf weibliche Themenfelder konzentriert und diese abstrakt-geometrisch oder gegenst\u00e4ndlich-fig\u00fcrlich umsetzt.<\/p>\n
Die Wandarbeit dagegen gibt bewusst keine Antwort auf die Frage, die sie stellt: Was genau ist dargestellt? Was ist damit gemeint? So ist der Besucher des Caf\u00e9s im Petuelpark auf sich gestellt, aufgefordert, diese Frage selbst zu beantworten, ein eigenes, pers\u00f6nliches System also \u2013 wie die K\u00fcnstlerin es formuliert hat \u2013 der Antworten und Deutungen, der Assoziationen und Tr\u00e4ume zu entwickeln: So entsteht eine eigene Gedankenwelt zwischen Erde und Himmel, zwischen der Objektivit\u00e4t und der Subjektivit\u00e4t, ein neues kosmologisches System mit einer ebenso authentischen wie intimen Erz\u00e4hlform.<\/p>\n","werk_txt_long_en":"

\u201cI\u2019ve discovered that I can take the language of a discipline and cross it with my personal life, putting one system on top of another,\u201d said the American sculptor Kiki Smith about her work as an artist. For the large wall on the upper floor of the caf\u00e9 in Petuelpark, she created a three-part mural that seeks to lure the visitor into a world of imagination and dreams. Two constellations of stars frame the image of a rose bush, as if the viewer were standing next to the bush at night and looking at the clear, starry sky. In this way, the artist opens up the building\u2019s interior to the exterior of Petuelpark.<\/p>\n
Smith\u2019s reliefs begin with bronze plates, whose outlines and image are treated with high-pressure jets of water. Afterward, the metal is processed so that a greenish patina invigorates the surface, allowing the material esthetic of the bronze to recede. The visual vocabulary for the artist\u2019s new series of works is derived from the most diverse historic, literary, scientific, or artistic sources and then mixed with her own personal world of ideas. Smith takes anatomical exams, medieval images, items and objects from very different cultures, mythologies, and religions\u2014often concentrating on themes concerning women\u2014and then transforms them in either abstract geometrical or representational figurative ways.<\/p>\n
The mural, on the other hand, deliberately provides no answer to the questions it asks: What exactly is depicted? What is meant by it? Guests at the caf\u00e9 in Petuelpark are left to their own devices, challenged to respond to these questions themselves, or, as the artist put it, to develop their own personal system of answers and interpretations, associations and dreams.
