Dar\u00fcber hinaus erhielt Olaf Metzel zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen, wie den Arnold-Bode-Preis (Kassel, 1994), den Wilhelm-Loth-Preis (Darmstadt, 1997), den Kunstpreis der Landeshauptstadt M\u00fcnchen (2005), den Lichtwark-Preis (Hamburg, 2010) und den Jerg-Ratgeb-Preis (Reutlingen, 2018). Die beiden vorangegangenen entstanden jeweils im Kontext einer Ausstellung: zuerst in M\u00fcnchen im Kunstbau des Lenbachhauses mit dem Titel Erst rechts, dann links, dann immer geradeaus, danach in K\u00f6ln im Museum f\u00fcr angewandte Kunst mit dem Titel &#8220;Gleich geht\u2019s weiter&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In beiden Installationen fasste Metzel die St\u00fctzpfeiler der vorgefundenen Architektur mit zwei \u00fcbereinander verlaufenden Leitplankenschleifen ein. Sie bildeten sozusagen einen geschlossenen Kreislauf und kehrten damit ihre eigentliche Funktion einer \u00e4u\u00dferen Begrenzung um. Metzel adaptierte das Motiv der umlaufenden Leitplanken in Bezug auf die unterschiedlichen r\u00e4umlichen und inhaltlichen Zusammenh\u00e4nge, die von den jeweiligen Ausstellungen formuliert wurden. Dabei stellt der Kunstbau, der sich bekanntlich \u00fcber einer U-Bahn-Station befindet, eine unmittelbare Beziehung zum aktuellen Projekt als permanente Installation in der Station Olympia-Einkaufszentrum her.<\/p>\n<p>Das Zwischengeschoss des dortigen Bahnhofs ist zentrale Schalterhalle und Verteilerebene, \u00fcber die die Fahrg\u00e4ste die Bahnsteige erreichen. Vier Rundpfeiler bilden den baulichen Akzent der Halle, die Metzel als \u201eBasis\u201c seiner Skulptur instrumentalisiert. Drei \u00fcbereinander platzierte B\u00e4nder aus Leitplanken umlaufen auf einer L\u00e4nge von 30 m in ca. 3 m H\u00f6he die Pfeiler. Die \u201everkehrte\u201c Anbringung schafft nicht nur ein Irritationsmoment f\u00fcr in die Station hinabgehenden Fahrg\u00e4ste, sondern bewirkt, dass die Installation von den Bahnsteigen aus zu sehen ist. Gleichzeitig erscheint sie wie ein Querriegel zum Bewegungsstrom der Passanten. Durch die seitlichen \u00dcberst\u00e4nde gegen\u00fcber den \u00e4u\u00dferen Pfeilern wird zusammen mit der hohen Montage der Eindruck einer \u201eschwebenden Leichtigkeit\u201c erweckt, ganz als ob die dreilagigen Leitplanke vertikal verschiebbar seien.<\/p>\n<p>Diese hybride Auffassung und Verwendung allt\u00e4glicher Gegenst\u00e4nde erfolgt bei Metzel jenseits einer blo\u00dfen anschaulichen \u00c4sthetisierung, sondern ist ein elementares Prinzip seines bildnerischen Denkens. Dabei verbinden sich Materialeigenschaften, Funktion und die daraus abgeleitete Bedeutung mit der Vorstellung und Umsetzung eines dialektischen Werk-Bergiffs, der autonome Gestalt und Wirklichkeitsbezug verkn\u00fcpft.<\/p>\n<p>Die sinnbildliche Wirkkraft von &#8220;Erst rechts, dann links, dann immer geradeaus&#8221; resultiert \u2013 wie schon in den fr\u00fcheren Variationen des Themas \u2013 aus der Verkehrung eines beinahe omnipr\u00e4senten Gegenstandes, die auf ironische Weise die emotionale Verbundenheit unserer Gesellschaft mit dem Mobilit\u00e4ts- und Geschwindigkeitsfetisch Automobil kommentiert. Metzels Absicht, \u201eauch den Wechsel von der Stra\u00dfe auf die Schiene (zu) pointieren\u201c wird damit in der f\u00fcr ihn charakteristischen Vieldeutigkeit \u00fcbertragen.<\/p>\n","werk_txt_long_en":"<p>Common guardrails of the type usually seen on our streets and highways comprise both the material and the theme that Olaf Metzel has interpreted in three variations so far. The two previous works were each created for an exhibition, one in Munich at the Kunstbau (art wing) of the Lenbachhaus, titled &#8220;Erst rechts, dann links, dann immer geradeaus&#8221;; then in Cologne, at the Museum f\u00fcr angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts), with the title &#8220;Gleich geht\u2019s weiter&#8221;. In both installations Metzel looped two overlapping guard rails around the existing architecture\u2019s supporting pillars. They formed a closed circuit, as it were, inverting their actual function as outdoor barriers.<\/p>\n<p>Metzel adapted the motif of circular guard rails to refer to the different spatial and contextual situations created by each exhibition. In doing so, the Kunstbau\u2014generally known to be located above a subway station\u2014is a direct connection to the project, which is now a permanent installation at the Olympia Shopping Center Station.<\/p>\n<p>The mezzanine of the train station there contains the main ticket counter, and passengers have to pass through it to reach the station platforms. Four round pillars comprise the hall\u2019s architectural accents, which Metzel uses as the &#8220;base&#8221; for his sculpture. Three bands of guard rails placed on top of each other to a height of around three meters run for thirty meters around the top of the pillars. The &#8220;inverted&#8221; installation not only provides a disturbing moment for passengers on their way down to the station, but it also ensures that it can be seen from the platforms, as well. At the same time, it looks like a horizontal crossbar whose shape reflects the constantly moving stream of passengers. The rails are mounted high on top of the pillars, closer to the ceiling, and in combination with the lateral sections that overhang the outer pillars on either side, an impression of \u201cfloating lightness\u201d is created, almost as if the three layers of guard rails could be shifted vertically up and down.<\/p>\n<p>For Metzel, this hybrid concept of everyday objects and their usage is more than just attractive aestheticization; rather, it is one of the elementary principles behind his pictorial ideas. The material qualities, function, and the meaning derived from them are combined with the notion of a dialectical concept of the work, which links the autonomous form with a relationship to reality. The emblematic power of Erst rechts, dann links, dann immer geradeaus results\u2014as it did in the earlier variations of this theme\u2014from inverting a nearly omnipresent object that ironically comments on our society\u2019s emotional connection to the fetish for mobility and speed the automobile inspires.
